Finder’s Hill Farm got it’s start in 1996, when we decided to buy a lovely piece of land in Bedford County for our horse Junior, a handsome bay quarter horse. Of course, then we had to build him some fences and a barn, and acquire a stable mate for him. Our house was an incidental necessity of no interest to Junior.

We owe a lot to that horse. Because of him, we had an almost alpaca-ready farm when we first came across an article about alpacas on the Tennessee Farm Bureau website in early 2002. With the help of lots of internet research and a couple of visits to nearby alpaca farms, we were able to begin our alpaca venture by the spring of that year. We began with 3 pregnant females and a cute little  gelding companion.  We’re now up to 20 alpacas, with five more on the way in the fall of 2007.

Junior and Ted (the stable mate) are happy to share the place with the alpacas, although in typical horse fashion they pretend to be indifferent. In fact, Junior alerted me to the birth of our first cria by nearly bucking me off (the subtler hints he had tried to give me went straight over my head). Things have settled down since then. We are still thrilled by each birth, but none of us get quite so agitated as we did the first couple of times.

Raising alpacas is pure pleasure. Every time we round the bend of our driveway and see our healthy herd of colorful alpacas we get a thrill. And it just gets better as the herd expands. They add a peaceful beauty to an already beautiful landscape, and continue to take our breath away.
